Placement Meeting

Parents applying for admission of their child to The Parish School are encouraged to attend a tour of our campus. Each tour lasts approximately an hour and includes an overview of the campus and classrooms, as well as a meeting with the Director of Admissions. We look forward to meeting each family’s child, however it is not necessary for the child to be present at the tour. At the time of the tour, the remainder of the admissions process is discussed and families have the opportunity to ask questions and further discuss their child’s needs.

Applications can be obtained during a tour of our campus or downloaded from our Web site. Applications are processed in the order which they are received. Once we receive an application, the child is placed on our admissions list. Please see the Fees/Tuition page for information regarding the application fee.

Documents needed for Preschool application:

• Application (Case History)

• Preschool Questionnaire (to be filled out by child’s teacher)

• Child Development Inventory (to be filled out by parent)

• Recent (within the last 2-3 years) evaluations/testing/reporting

Needed Documentation for Elementary (6 years old and above):

• Application

• School Questionnaire

• Recent evaluations/testing/reporting

Once a student’s application file is complete a consultation will be scheduled. The consultation is an informal screening of each child completed by a speech language pathologist. The consultation helps determine the level at The Parish School that will most appropriately meet the needs of the child. A consultation will only be scheduled once the child’s file is complete. Please consult the Fees/Tuition page for information regarding the cost of the consult.

The recommendation of a classroom visit will be based on feedback from the consultation as well as application and testing information provided by the parents and professionals working with the child. School visits are an opportunity for The Parish School staff to observe and interact with the child in our classroom setting. Visits are scheduled for a minimum of two consecutive days to allow the child to become familiar with the classroom routine and to provide a more accurate snapshot of his or her skills. Because we tailor a child’s placement specifically to his or her needs, the class each child visits may not necessarily be the class in which he or she will be placed. During the school visit, parents will have the opportunity to observe their child.

The final step of the admission process is a meeting, which includes all of The Parish School staff who have been involved in the admissions/placement process for the child. At this time, a collaborative decision is made regarding the ability of The Parish School to meet the child’s needs. Once a decision has been made, you will receive a phone call from the Admissions Office to schedule a meeting to review our recommendations for the child. If the placement committee makes a recommendation for enrollment in The Parish School, a contract will be issued. The contract will outline all of the recommendations of the placement committee.

Children served at The Parish School are of average to above average ability with language/learning differences. These children are able to benefit from our child to teacher ratio of 5 to 1. Children are considered for placement year-round and can be admitted through March if an opening exists. Our classes are multi-aged groupings focusing on developmental strengths and weaknesses.
