Admissions FAQ
Do you accept new students during the school year?
Yes, we have rolling admissions provided that an opening exists. We will place children through March of the school year.
What is a Level?
Children are placed in classrooms based on developmental levels. Our classrooms utilize multi-age groups, allowing children to learn from one another.
What are the hours of the school day?
The hours of the school day depend on which level is the most appropriate placement for your child. They are as follows:
Level A (2 and 3 years): Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Level A/I and I/II (3 – 5 years): Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
**Early morning drop off (as early as 8 am) and extended day until 3 p.m. are available for an additional fee for these two levels. Available on first come, first serve basis.
Elementary (Bridge through 5th grade): 8:15 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.
** Early morning drop off as early as 7 a.m. Available on first come, first serve basis.
How do I get an application?
Application materials can be mailed to your home by calling the admissions office, Kaitlin McLaughlin (713-467-4696 x 116) or can be downloaded from the website (Admissions/Case History). For children under the age of 6, you will have to call the admissions office to get a packet mailed to you. One of the documents is not provided on the website.
What happens after I return the application?
A spot will be held in the Levels correlating with your child’s age by the date the application is received. If an opening exists, the process can begin immediately. If an opening does not exist, your child’s name will remain on the waiting list until one occurs, and the remainder of the process will be put on hold.
How do I complete my child’s file?
Needed Documentation for Preschool:
Application (Case History),
Preschool Questionnaire (to be filled out by child’s teacher)
Child Development Inventory (to be filled out by parent-mail only
Any recent (within the last 2-3 years) evaluations/testing/reporting
Needed Documentation for Elementary (6 and above):
Application
School Questionnaire
Any recent evaluations/testing/reporting
Once your child has a complete file, a consultation will be scheduled. Please note that a consultation will only be scheduled once there is a complete file and that paperwork needs to be turned in as soon as possible in order to respect other families waiting in line. A 48-hour turn around time is ideal. If we make multiple calls and still are not receiving paperwork, we will move on to the next family in line.
What is a consultation?
It is a one-on-one informal assessment with your child. Your child will meet with the clinician for about 45 minutes, and then parents will join. Both parents do not have to attend, only one is required. The fee is $350 if you pay the $50 application fee up front and $400 if you pay all together.
Does my child still need a consultation if he/she has had a recent evaluation/assessment?
Yes, he or she will need to be seen for a consultation by one of our clinicians if the recent evaluation was not completed at the Carruth Center. If a full evaluation has been scheduled at The Carruth Center, no consultation will be needed.
Why don’t I get a report after the consultation?
The consultation is an informal screening designed to determine appropriate placement at The Parish School. Because of the informal nature of the consultation, and not a standardized measure, a report is not written.
What happens after the consultation?
Based on the clinician’s findings, she may or may not recommend your child to visit in the classroom. The visit will be a minimum of two days. Various professionals on staff will be observing and interacting with your child while he/she visits the classroom.
Will I get to see my child in the classroom while he visits?
Yes, you will get a chance to observe your child behind a one-way mirror on the second day he/she visits. The observation will be scheduled in most instances during the first hour of the school day right after drop-off.
Who decides if The Parish School is appropriate for my child?
The placement committee will meet once your child has come for a minimum 2-day visit in one of our classrooms. The committee consists of:
Director of Admissions and Family Services
Clinician who conducted the informal consultation.
Teachers from the classroom your child visited.
Level coordinator
Speech–Language Pathologist (for elementary levels)
Principal
When do I found out if my child will attend The Parish School?
Within ten days after your child has completed his/her visit.
What is the tuition amount for the school year?
The tuition is amount is different for each level.
Level A - $22,885 – 99% eligible for reimbursement
Level A/I - $21,736 – 87% eligible for reimbursement
Level I/II - $19,733 – 96% eligible for reimbursement
Bridge - 5th grade -- $23,182 -- 65% eligible for reimbursement
Do I have to pay up front?
There are two payment plans. The total payment plan is due at the time you return your contract for the full tuition amount. The ten-payment plan is paid out over ten months (or if starting after the start of the school year, however many months until May). A registration fee of $3,250 is due at the time you return your contract and the rest is paid out over the months. A 3.5% carrying charge will be added each month.
Tuition seems expensive, what does my tuition pay for?
Your child is receiving specialized services from a highly professional and educated staff. Our low ratios and individualized curriculum give your child the support he/she needs in order to catch up to speed with other peers in the regular education environment. Tuition only covers 64% of operating costs on the campus, and the remaining costs have to be raised by donations from foundations, corporations, individual donors and proceeds from the annual Gala and other events.
How do I find out about scholarship/financial assistance?
The application for scholarship can be found online under Admissions/Fast Application. Any questions can be directed to Wendy Airlie, Chief Financial Officer at x 120.
I’ve heard that our health insurance may reimburse us. How does this work?
If your child attends The Parish School, we are able to provide documentation of treatment as an out of network provider, which some health insurance plans reimburse. The process can be a lengthy one and payment results vary. An insurance reimbursement FAQ can be obtained by calling The Admissions Office, or by visiting the Carruth Center web site.
Where do children go after attending The Parish School?
As an intervention program, we focus on mainstreaming children to a more typical classroom setting when possible. Most children transition to a variety of public and private schools in Houston and surrounding areas. While all students improve at The Parish School some will continue to demonstrate learning differences, which require a specialized learning environment in junior high and high school. Our staff works closely with parents and other schools in determining the next placement for a student so he or she is able to continue with a successful learning experience.
