The board of trustees of The Parish School has appointed Cheval Bryant, MCD, CCC-SLP, as the next head of school, effective June 3, 2019. Bryant replaces Nancy Bewley, the current head of school, who is retiring at the end of the 2018-19 school year.

Cheval Bryant brings a wealth of academic and therapeutic experience to The Parish School. She has held a variety of positions in private clinics, rehabilitation centers and hospitals, but the bulk of her time has been dedicated to the education of children, which is her passion. With more than 20 years of leadership in speech-language pathology and special education, Bryant brings experience in management, operations, strategic planning, training, finance and recruitment, but most importantly she brings an ardent desire to help children who have communication delays and learning differences. Bryant is currently the senior manager in the Office of Special Education for Houston Independent School District, where she has served for the past 7 years, leading more than 160 speech-language professionals, as well as overseeing physical therapy, occupational therapy, and assistive technology services. Prior to this senior management position, she was the owner of a private speech therapy practice, Speech Options, LLC, for 10 years.

The Parish School’s Head of School Search Committee, a sub-committee of the board of trustees, enthusiastically recommended Bryant to the board after an extensive national search process. Bewley gives a ringing endorsement of her successor.

“I was impressed with Cheval’s leadership experience in both small and large settings, as well as her qualifications in both speech-language pathology and special education,” said Bewley. “Cheval also strikes a healthy balance between professionalism and warm personability. But most importantly, Cheval ‘gets us.’ Our culture and educational philosophy are unique to Parish and set us far apart from other schools. She understands who we are and where we’ve been.”

The Parish School’s Search Committee worked closely with The Education Group (TEG), a search and placement firm with 30 years’ experience in placing school leaders, administrators and educators across the country. The search committee and TEG met with various Parish constituent groups to determine the qualities and characteristics necessary for the new head of school. Over the past 8 months, they worked confidentially with candidates to recruit the most talented leaders in the country. They considered and interviewed many high-quality candidates before selecting Bryant as the lone finalist.

“I am very excited to join the Parish family because The Parish Way resonates with my ‘why’ in every way,” Bryant begins. “My ‘why’ is advocating for the best interest of students with language difficulties and learning differences. My ‘why’ is ensuring that students are cared for and nurtured first as children, setting them up to be successful students.  My ‘why’ is creating learning environments that highlight the strengths of each student so they can thrive.”

Over the coming months, there will be many opportunities for the community to meet Bryant. For a list of events, as well as updates on the transition process, please visit
